Cell Phone Number Lookup

The proliferation of cell phones has created a gap in the comprehensive listings usually found in traditional telephone directories. As cellular phones become more popular, there has been debate about releasing cell phone numbers into public 411 and reverse number directories. (S. 1963, the "Wireless 411 Privacy Act" 9/2004). Efforts to create comprehensive cellular directory have met stiff opposition from several fronts, including a significant percentage of subscribers who seek to avoid telemarketers. Right now, cell phone numbers are not available in any public 411 phone directory or reverse-number directory. However, several information companies claim to provide cell phone numbers and reverse cell phone lookup online through their websites. This practice seems legal under US law but it is not clear how the sites obtain information on the cell phone owners, nor is there independent verifications of the accuracy and completeness of the cell phone number search results.
In 1991, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled (in Feist v. Rural) that telephone companies do not have a copyright on telephone listings, because copyright protects creativity and not the mere labor of collecting existing information. Within the geographical reach of the Court, the Feist ruling has resulted in the availability of many innovative telephone directory services on CD-ROM and the World Wide Web. [Source: Wikipedia]
